News from 2011

The rehab season began slowly this year, with the first baby squirrels not arriving until March and baby bird calls not starting until the beginning of May. From then on things went fairly normally, until we hit an unexpected, (but not unwelcome!) lull in the beginning of August. Our rest was short-lived, however, when Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee inundated us with a boat-load of baby squirrels. However, as October begins, almost all of these babies have been returned to the wild.

We also have some good news to share about our volunteers. Maura Wade has completed her apprenticeship and is now eligible for her rehabilitator's license. Congratulations Maura! And just as Maura completed her requirements, I got a call from Lora Collins, who is now our newest volunteer and an apprentice rehabber. Welcome Lora!

We would like to thank Mother Nature's, in Columbia, for their feeder cleaning event that raised over $300 in donations for us.  Please visit them and browse their beautiful and unique gift items, which includes a wide variety of items to care for our wildlife neighbors.

And lastly, we are still in need of volunteers to drive animals to our vets, who are located in Bel Air and Abingdon. If you, or anyone you know, would be willing to help with this, please let us know. Handling the animals is not required, and we will provide monetary assistance.

What We Do

baby rabbit

We care for small mammals and birds that are ill, injured or orphaned. Our goal is to restore them to health and release them back to the wild. We receive referrals from Howard County Animal Control, Maryland Department of Natural Resources, local veterinary practices, as well as individuals. On average we care for 300 to 400 wild creatures a year. We also address the public's concerns by providing educational materials and phone consultations.
